A Historic Raleigh Wedding Venue with Southern Charm

Completed in 1800 for John Haywood, North Carolina’s first elected state treasurer, Haywood Hall is a rare example of Federal-period architecture in Raleigh. The historic home remained in the Haywood family for nearly two centuries, with four generations living within its walls until 1977. Haywood Hall has been preserved as a historic site.

One of its most beloved features is Eliza’s Garden, originally planted in 1809 by John Haywood’s wife. Full of vibrant flowers, fruit trees, and heirloom plantings, the garden still flourishes around a majestic 200-year-old magnolia tree. It’s no surprise this enchanting space has become a sought-after location for weddings in Raleigh, offering a romantic and serene setting for couples to say “I do.”

Getting Ready Inside the Historic Home

Katie and Matt’s wedding day began inside the historic home itself, with both the bride and groom getting ready in separate rooms filled with character and charm. The bridal suite, with its rich hardwood floors and gorgeous natural window light, offered a calm and elegant space for Katie and her bridesmaids to prepare. Just down the hall, Matt and his groomsmen shared laughs and played cards at a small table—soaking in the moment before putting on their jackets and ties. The timeless interior of Haywood Hall added a sense of heritage and intimacy to the morning, making it the perfect backdrop for emotional getting ready photos on both sides.

A Garden First Look to Remember

One of the most emotional moments of the day was Katie and Matt’s first look in Eliza’s Garden. Surrounded by lush greenery, they shared a quiet moment together before the ceremony. The storybook backdrop created a connection to centuries of love stories that have taken place on these same grounds.

Rain-Kissed Outdoor Ceremony

While many couples might choose to move indoors at the first sign of a rainy forecast, Katie and Matt made the intentional decision to proceed with their planned outdoor ceremony at Haywood Hall—rain or shine. The skies were a mix of sun and clouds as the ceremony began, but not long after the vows started, raindrops began to fall, gradually turning into a steady shower. Guests opened umbrellas and embraced the moment, and Katie and Matt never wavered. Their choice to stay the course added an authentic, cinematic feel to the ceremony—romantic, a little wild, and completely unforgettable. The photos captured in that moment are some of the most moving and joyful of the entire day.

Portraits, Laughter, and Dancing Under the Tent

After the ceremony, the newlyweds took a few moments to dry off before heading back outside for portraits. The rain created a soft, diffused light that brought out the beauty of the location—and their connection—perfectly.

The celebration continued under the venue’s elegant white reception tent, where guests enjoyed dinner, heartfelt toasts, and plenty of dancing. The energy was high, the joy contagious, and Katie and Matt’s smiles never faded.

A Sparkler Exit Down the Brick Path

As the evening came to a close, Katie and Matt made their grand exit through a tunnel of sparklers, walking hand-in-hand down the same narrow brick path in front of Haywood Hall where they had exited their ceremony just hours earlier. The warm glow of the sparklers, the historic home behind them, and the joy of the day made for a truly magical ending to a celebration filled with love, history, and unforgettable memories.
